Attention Writers of "Boy Books"

Are you writing YA or MG fiction for boys? Then check out this great conversation between two real-life teen boys and their mother at (one of my favorite blogs) Writing as Jo(e). Summary? Feelings. Blech.

This is pretty funny, and reflects dozens of conversations I've had with my brother between the ages of eleven and sixteen.

ME: "So, you're cool, right? If there was anything wrong you'd tell me, right?"

HIM: "Um. Okay."
ME: "No, I don't mean now. I mean, like, ever. Because you can talk to me if you need to."

HIM: "Uh, okay. Yeah."

(The 'yeah' was only thrown on there so I would SHUT THE HELL UP.)

Of 'strong, silent types' I do believe he is the strongest and most silent. Which is hilarious, given the tantrums he used to throw...

Tadmack: That's so cute :) Your conversation reminds me of a fictional brother -sister I know!

You're welcome, HWM

Here's one of those disconnects, where boys talk about their feelings by not talking about them. And then there's the fact that, as real as the dialog is, no boy wold want to read dialog that realistic.

They'd rather read about actions than feelings. But we insist that writing for kids means it all has to follow the same rules, and that means a writing that is more geared toward girls who prefer to read about emotions and descriptions of objects.

In the UK we have a TV show that tracks the lives of children born in 2000 (they are 7/8 in the latest series). To see the difference between the boys and girls now is shocking. The girls are chatty, articulate, a bit old for their years perhaps, but you could hold an extended conversation with any of them. The boys, as one critic put it, have all the communication skills of Rain Man.
It's not just teens. It's boys.

I love that Jo(e). She writes so beautifully and has such a great family.

Nick, I don't think all boys are like that. I happen to know some very articulate ones who never shut up. They can talk about feelings when they want to...
