Weekend Reviews (I)

It's that time of year again. Time for long walks, playing outside, and the Spring New York Times children's book section. Here's what's in store this time:

  • Bruce Handy reviews Kevin Henkes latest book, A Good Day. Handy begins the review with this simple statement: "It should be said: Kevin Henkes is a genius." Agreed.
  • Sarah Boxer reviews jazz-themed picture books
  • Robert Coontz considers recent books on global warming and hurricanes (including the Al Gore book)
  • Joanna Rudge Long reviews new poetry books, including many of my recent favorites--The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems, Ted Hughes' Collected Poems for Children, and Animal Poems.
  • Ann Hodgeman takes a look at The Lost Files of Nancy Drew
  • (The) John Green reviews Chris Raschka's The Purple Balloon
  • Elizabeth Deveraux reviews Mal Peet's Tamar, a book I desperately want to read.
  • J.D. Biersdorfer reads Sabuda and Reinhart's latest creation, Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Mega-Beasts
  • Amy Krouse Rosenthal loves How to Be a Baby...by Me, the Big Sister
  • In the note-to-self department: Remember to read the boxes too! (The) Ned Vizzini reviews Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese and Stuck in the Middle: 17 Comics From an Unpleasant Age, edited by Ariel Schrag

And, for you podcast fans, Julie Just talks children's books in this week's NYT Book Review Podcast.

More later this evening...
