This week's Poetry Friday entry is an original. I promise it will be my last laptop-related post.*
Requiem for a Laptop
Brilliant white words dance
across a bright blue screen.
Memory and dump torment
like the pointy fingers of fairies,
plucking and thieving from
the heart of my mind.
Taking with them:
--syllabi and lectures
--overwrought research articles
--letters of recommendation
(long departed students, beware!)
--conference papers heavy in
their rhetorical cases
--three novels and the skeletons
of four more
--the audio files of children,
the fairies don’t care.
They’re beautiful, but cruel
as they knit their crowns resplendent
with the bits and bobs of
my Soulless P.C. Leaving me,
lumpen and pale, with
a mute carcass and
the Black Screen of Death.

* I finally received a replacement laptop. Status of my harddrive is unknown.
Over the next few days, I'll be catching up on e-mail, posting a review or two, and rounding up the weekend reviews. Thank you all for your patience!

Oh, Kelly,
That is a deep, searing pain! I feel your cries from laptop hell echoing all over cyberspace. May things only improve from here!
You poor thing. But I enjoyed the poem!
(I think, as a Southerner, I'm supposed to say "bless your heart," so . . . bless your heart) . . .
That is sad. Sad, sad, sad. I am sorry for your loss.
You really do seem to be doomed laptop-wise... Wonder what you did to offend the gods of technology ? ;-D
Seriously, I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trauma - I do hope you've got backups of everything - you did learn that from your last laptop disaster, didn't you ?
OMG, you backed up the books, right? I backed up my book obsessively when I was writing it. I was so, so afraid of my computer eating all that work.
Sending you good vibes.
Ach! The Black Screen of Death has inspired many a rant, but I am glad that at least some poetry came out of it.
Oh NO. Your writing!!!!
I am now going to go and back up EVERYTHING.
I still am amused that you've come up with a poem out of it -- a true artisté through it all!
Oh Kelly, I feel your pain. I just traded in my desktop at work for a laptop and am paranoid that I will lose everything I've ever done. I can't decide if I'd be more upset about my iTunes files or work-related stuff. However, I still write all my work by hand and then type, so my poems and manuscripts could be retrieved, though it would take time.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Tricia
((computer vibes))
Oh Kelly--
Words cannot express ...
So, so sorry ...
Kelly,
I just joined the "crash" club. My husband tried to calm me down before he left for Canada this morning. I've been sending good vibes your way. I hope they've helped! I just hope I can retrieve my course syllabus and all my poetry manuscripts. Good luck to both of us!
I must stop laughing or I won't do any work! Then again laughter's good for health. Thank you for the lovely poem Kelly, and I am happy that you received your replacement laptop.
